Alexander Rynéus (b. 1987) is a filmmaker and artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. Working across documentary film and moving-image installation, he develops long-term, place-based projects that explore memory, mythology, community and transformation. His work often begins with a specific landscape or community and moves between documentary observation and more poetic and speculative forms.
His latest feature documentary, Once You Shall Be One of Those Who Lived Long Ago (2025), co-directed with Per Bifrost, premiered in the main competition at Edinburgh International Film Festival. It has since been selected for Nordisk Panorama, Nordic Film Days Lübeck, Tromsø International Film Festival, Tempo Documentary Festival, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and Docs Ireland. The film is released theatrically in Sweden in September 2026 by Lucky Dogs.
Previous films include Giants and the Morning After (2018), The Glitter Factory (2023), Stekenjokk and the Guardians of the Eggs (2019) and Autonomous (2014). His films and installations have been presented at festivals and institutions including CPH:DOX, Moderna Museet/ArkDes, Kalmar Konstmuseum, Hallands Konstmuseum and Konstnärshuset. His work has been distributed theatrically by Folkets Bio and Lucky Dogs and broadcast or streamed by SVT, UR, Netflix and Disney+.
Rynéus holds an MFA in Fine Art from Konstfack and studied documentary film at Biskops Arnö.
